Abstract
This study examines the characteristics and transformation of Sech'wi (細吹), a court banquet ensemble newly introduced during the regency of Crown Prince Hyomyŏng (1827–1830). First appearing in the 1828 (Sunjo 28) Muja chinjak, Sech'wi was used not only for naeyŏn (內宴) but also for the newly established yayŏn (夜宴) and igiryŏn (翌日宴). Installed as a single ensemble on the chŏnsang (殿上) platform, it differed from the existing chŏnsangak (殿上樂) through an expanded instrumentation—including pugu (浮漚), ulla (雲鑼), ch’ŏljŏk (鐵笛), ka (笳), and yanggŭm (洋琴)—and was adjusted according to each banquet’s scale and nature. After King Hŏnjong’s reign, most experimental instruments disappeared, and Sech'wi lost its independent role as the banquet music system returned to chŏnsangak and chŏnjŏng hŏnga By King Kojong’s period, the term Sech'wi referred instead to a small ensemble centered on samhyŏn (三絃) and samjuk (三竹) for accompanying kagok (歌曲), as seen in the akkasamjang (樂歌三章) of yayŏn and the accompaniment of ch’angsa (唱詞) in court dances. The trajectory of Sech'wi shows that Crown Prince Hyomyŏng’s musical initiatives continued to influence later court music and were reinterpreted into the Taehan Empire. Sech'wi thus illustrates how late Chosŏn court music adapted creatively to changing ceremonial contexts.
