Abstract

This study examines the procurement and operational systems of musical instruments in late Joseon Dynasty court banquets (yeonhyang, 宴享) through Yeonhyang Uigwe records. While previous research focused on banquet structure and court dances, this study analyzes practical administrative aspects, including instrument production, repair, storage, and administrative procedures within their economic and social contexts. The study examines 12 Yeonhyang Uigwe volumes to investigate how temporary organizations managed instruments during banquet preparation. Following the temporal flow from preparation to completion, it analyzes the entire process from procurement methods and transportation to post-use return. Chapter 2 examines responsible agencies, spatial configuration, and musical ensemble organization. Banquet space size and openness directly influenced scale, ensemble composition, and guest numbers. Agencies organized ensembles according to spatial characteristics and requested specific instruments from government offices like Sangeuiwon and Jangakwon. Chapter 3 distinguishes between new production and repair as preparation methods. Instrument preparation gradually established repair as standard practice due to fiscal austerity following invasions, demands for banquet moderation, and maintaining Confucian cultural continuity. Systematic operations included transportation by guards, storage arrangements, and on-site inspections by specialists. This research reveals that musical instrument procurement involved organic collaboration between government offices (Jangakwon, Sangeuiwon, Hojo) and specialized personnel. The administrative system governed procedures from inspection through production, repair, and return, contributing to understanding Joseon Dynasty music administration and ritual culture.
