Abstract

Court musical instruments in the Joseon Dynasty served as crucial mediators that embodied ritual formality and royal authority beyond their function as mere performance tools. Accordingly, the production, preservation, supply, and management of instruments were core elements of court music operations. However, existing research has primarily focused on temporary institutions, while the roles of permanent institutions have received relatively little attention. This study examines the court musical instrument management functions performed by permanent institutions, including Bongsangsi, Jangagwon, Sangui-won, and Gunggigam, based on administrative sources. Through analysis of documentary materials regarding instrument production, repair, preservation, and supply conducted by each institution, this research provides a comprehensive examination of the overall operational system of musical instrument administration in the Joseon Dynasty. The findings reveal that Bongsangsi played a central role in maintaining the authenticity of ritual music by overseeing the production and distribution of sacrificial instruments and preserving ancient instruments. Jangagwon, as the overarching institution for court music, operated a comprehensive management system encompassing instrument production, tuning correction, repair, material procurement, and regional distribution, thereby serving a pivotal role in instrument management for the practice of ritual music, including pitch standardization. Sangui-won extended beyond its original function of producing court attire to specialize in the production and repair of banquet instruments, forming a complementary relationship with Jangagwon. Additionally, Gunggigam produced and managed military-purpose instruments, playing an important role in military ceremonies and communication systems. Through this analysis, it is confirmed that the operation of court musical instruments in Joseon was characterized by a multilayered structure achieved through collaboration and division of labor among specialized permanent institutions differentiated according to purpose and function. This study contributes to reexamining the complexity and systematicity of court music administration in the Joseon Dynasty by elucidating the musical instrument management functions of permanent institutions.
