Abstract

This study critically reassesses previous scholarship that has focused exclusively on the Ch’anggŭk activities of the Chosŏn Sŏngak Yŏn’guhoe on the theater stage as the defining achievement in the establishment of Ch’anggŭk during the 1930s, and instead seeks instead to reinterpret this process within the broader historical trajectory of the genre. Building upon earlier research, the study examines the formation of early Ch’anggŭk as it developed around Hyŏmnyulsa and Wŏngaksa in the 1900s; the establishment of a regular performance system in the 1910s through private theaters such as Kwangmudae, Changan-sa, and Dansŏng-sa; and the expansion of performance agents through the participation of the Kyŏngsŏng Old School Actors’ Association and the Kisaeng Association. The study further analyzes the media-based dissemination of Ch’anggŭk in the 1920s, focusing on the rise of phonograph records and radio broadcasts, as well as the proliferation of master singer competitions and traditional music organizations during this period. The findings indicate that the Ch’anggŭk system formalized by the Chosŏn Sŏngak Yŏn’guhoe in the 1930s should be understood as a process in which accumulated performance practices and media experiences since the 1900s were institutionally systematized. In particular, the interconnection of various activities—recordings, broadcasts, singer competitions, and theater performances—enabled Ch’anggŭk to solidify its position as a modern performance genre and expand into the domain of modern popular culture. Thus, the establishment of Ch’anggŭk in the 1930s should be viewed not merely as the achievement of the Chosŏn Sŏngak Yŏn’guhoe, but rather as the institutional convergence of practices and organically developed traditions that had accumulated since the early 1900s.
