Abstract
The Suez Canal and the Panama Canal, the world's two largest canals, are experiencing operational problems. Accordingly, an increase in global sea transport fares and route changes are inevitable. Thus, it is necessary to wisely find countermeasures according to supply chain changes. Nevertheless, studies on relationships between the world's two major canals and domestic ports are insufficient. Therefore, this study analyzed effects of the volume of the world's two major canals on the volume of domestic ports through a vector autoregression model. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the volume of Suez Canal had a negative (-) effect on volumes of Gwangyang Port and Incheon Port in the first follow-up vehicle, while it had a positive (+) effect on the volume of Pyeongtaek Port in the second follow-up vehicle. It was also found that the volume of Panama Canal had a negative (-) effect on volumes of Gwangyang Port and Ulsan Port in the first follow-up vehicle but a positive (+) effect on the volume of Pyeongtaek Port in the second follow-up vehicle. Impact response function and prediction error variance decomposition have been additionally conducted to closely examine the impact of the world's two largest canals on domestic port volume.
