Abstract

This study intends to examine the dynamic relationships between key economic indicators and container throughput at Busan New Port. Specifically, it estimates vector error-correction models using monthly data from 2015 to 2025, with separate analyses for export (BCEV) and import (BCIV) volumes to identify how global demand (BDI), supply-chain congestion (GSCPI), and exchange rate fluctuations (USD/KRW) transmit to port throughput. Accumulated impulse responses indicate that exports rise following a positive BDI shock and decline under higher GSCPI, while the exchange-rate effect on exports is modest. Imports respond negatively to both KRW depreciation and congestion, while BDI exerts a positive effect. Forecast error variance decompositions show that, at longer horizons, export volatility is increasingly explained by BDI and GSCPI (each about 10% at H=10), whereas the exchange rate remains marginal. For imports, the combined contribution of external shocks expands to roughly 41% by H=10, with the exchange rate leading at medium horizons and BDI becoming slightly dominant at longer horizons; GSCPI maintains a steady 10% contribution. These findings highlight inertia in short-run throughput dynamics, and identify demand, congestion, and pricing channels as primary sources of medium- to long-run volatility. Policy implications include peak-shaving and flexible gate/yard operations for exports, alongside exchange-rate risk management and procurement/ inventory timing for imports.
