만 5세 샘터반 유아들이 사용한 비규범어들을 통한 문화적 문식성에 관한 탐구

오늘날 유아들이 경험하고 있는 정보화시대의 언어생활은 다양한 언어매체를 통한 다중 문식성 시대로 변화하였다. 유아의 언어발달 과정은 유아가 속한 사회 문화적 맥락과 불가분의 관계를 갖게 되며, 유아는 자신이 속한 사회의 문화적 지식을 습득하여야 의사소통의 도구인 언어를 유능하게 사용할 수 있다는 문화적 문식성이 대두되고 있다. 만 5세 샘터반의 참여 관찰과 심층면담을 통해 현재 유아들 사이에 통용되는 문화적 문식성 언어들(은어 및 유행어, 컴퓨터 관련어, 애칭, 게임어, 만화, 방송언어 등)을 수집하여, 이들 문화적 문식성 언어는 어떤 의미로 사용하고 있으며, 이들 언어는 또래문화에 어떻게 영향을 미치고 있는가를 알아보고자 하였다. 그 결과 오늘날의 유아 언어 환경 속에는 문화적 문식성 언어들이 언어 텍스트로 자리 잡아 가고 있으며, 유아의 언어발달을 촉진하기 위해서는 언어발달 매개자와의 활발한 사회적 관계가 필요함을 시사하고 있었다. 나아가 유아들은 또래 문화의 구성원이 되기 위해 글자를 읽고 쓰려고 노력하고, 읽은 것을 기억하여 다시 문화적 환경 속에서 언어를 발견하면서 언어를 확장해 나가고 있음을 알 수 있었다.
Abstract
Today young children in the digital age are experiencing the changes brought about by multiple literacies. Not surprisingly, the process of language development is inevitably related to whatever social cultural context young children belong to. Thus, young children should acquire a broad spectrum of the cultural knowledge of their societies. Using observation and interview techniques, this study focuses on cultural literacy, its meaning and effect on peer cultures, and their cultural literacy language (secret language, current language, computer language, nicknames, game language, animated cartoons, broadcasting language, etc.) as experienced by the five-year-old children of Saem Tuh class at the Cham-Sun Kindergarten. The study finds that popular cultural literacy language has settled on the language of texts. To assist children in enlarging their language range, educators need to recognize the popular cultural literacy language and coordinate children’s social interactions with their general language development. Young children desire to read and write in order to use and be part of the cultural language surrounding them. By encouraging young children in their desire to learn to read and write by facilitating their ability to interact with the tools of their peer cultural literacy, educators will be able to enlarge the scope, and, ultimately, the depth of young children’s language abilities.
