Abstract
Assuming that the often researched phenomenon of peer learning in early childhood might have focused heavily on the affirmative side of peer involvement in social and academic learning, this study, using qualitative research methods, especiallyparticipant observation of children in natural interactive situations during free play activitie to more comprehensively assess peer influence and collaboration inlearning. To this end, the study investigated the free play activities of 34 kindergarteners, all 5 years of age, from March, 2006 to July, 2006, through employing participant observations, in-dept interviews, drawing up of records and analysis of data recursively. The results of the study show that, indeed. peer learning has affirmative sides just as the earlier existing studies assert: peers were valuable resources in learning for they engaged in reciprocal encouragement and offered new ideas. However, this study also found negative aspects which heretofore had gone unnoted: children were unkind to less familiar friends, sought their own profits by cheating friends with poorer abilities, and disregarded friends’ requests with their silence. Such phenomena present more complicated aspects of mutual intimacyand children's temperaments and should be taken into consideration when teachers program for peer learning. The study demonstrates clearly that peers are important resources for studying, but they are not the same sort of resources as adults. Therefore, the findings suggest that teachers be aware of the full array of peer interaction dynamics and guide and intervene accordingly.
