Abstract

It is incontestable that peer relations have a profound effect on a child’s development. In examining the role of peer relations in peer victimization in early childhood, this study asks if the ability to form friendships affects a child’s acceptance and or rejection and victimization by peers. Subjects were 10 teachers and 135 (73 girls and 62 boys) of their students, three to seven years of age and attending day care centers and kindergartens. The teachers completed rating scales to identify and measure peer victimization and the children reported on peer acceptance and rejection using the positive and negative peer nominations tool. Pearson’s correlation analysis was used to examine the children’s friendship, peer acceptance and rejection, and peer victimization. In addition, the effects of friendship on peer acceptance and rejection, and peer victimizaion were analyzed with multiple regression analysis, using the AMOS 18.0 Program. Findings show statistically significant correlations between peer rejection and peer victimization. However, the findings also show that the ability to form friendships acted as a shield against peer rejection and peer victimization. These findings have strong implications for early childhood education policy-makers and providers.
