Abstract

This study establishes and analyzes the statistical correlations between individual teacher-child relationships and children's peer preference and peer victimization. Subjects were 102 children (47 girls and 55 boys), all three and four years of age and attending day care centers and kindergartens, and 10 of their teachers. The teachers completed rating scales to measure their perceptions of teacher-child relationships, peer victimization and the children reported on peer preference through positive and negative peer nominations. Pearson's correlation analysis was used to examine the relationships among the three categories. Additionally, the effects of teacher-child relationships on children's peer preference and peer victimization were analyzed according to multiple regression analysis, using the AMOS 18.0 Program. Findings indicate that 1) teacher-child relationships characterized by closeness have positive and statistically significant correlations with children's peer preference but have negative correlations with peer victimization; 2) teacher-child relationships characterized by conflict for the child have negative correlations with children's peer preference but have positive significant correlations with peer victimization; 3) negative correlations are also found between children's peer preference and peer victimization. Specifically, the effects on the teacher-child relationships of closeness to children's peer victimization and the teacher-child relationships of conflict to children's peer preference and victimization. In sum, the character of individual teacher-child relationships has an influential role in classroom peer preferences and peer victimization.
