유아교육기관에서 이루어지는 안전교육 실제와 교사의 어려움 및 요구

본 연구의 목적은 유아교육기관에서 교사들이 안전교육을 어떻게 실천하고 있으며, 이 과정에서 교사들이 어떠한 어려움을 경험하고, 효율적인 안전교육을 위해서 어떠한 요구를 지니고있는지에 대해서 분석하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 유치원 교사 10명을 대상으로 심층면담을 실시하였다. 연구결과 첫째, 교사들은 학기 초에 연간계획을 수립할 때 안전교육에 대한 계획을 세우고 생활주제와 연계하여 안전교육을 실시하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 교사들은 일상생활 속에서 수시로 안전교육을 시행하고 있으며, 훈련을 통한 교육, 대집단 활동으로 이루어지는 교육, 가정과 연계한 교육, 그리고 지역사회 전문가와의 협력을 통한 교육을 하고 있었다. 둘째, 교사들은 유아들에게 안전교육을 실시하는 과정에서 어려움을 겪고 있으며, 안전교육 시간을 준수하고 문서로 기록하는 작업은 교사들의 어려움을 가중시키는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 안전체험관 이용을 희망하지만 예약이 어렵거나 이동 거리가 멀어서 이용하기 어려운 경우가 많았다. 셋째, 교사들은 효율적인 안전교육이 이루어지기 위해서 안전교육을 위한 다양한 교재·교구 개발, 유치원 특성을 반영한 안전교육 시간 운영 및 평가 방법의 개선, 안전체험관의 확충, 그리고 안전교육 내용의 수준별 지침 제공을 요구하는 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
This study examines practices of early childhood teachers toward safety education in kindergarten as well as their difficulties and needs. In-depth interviews conducted with 10 early childhood teachers reveal that they implement safety education based on yearly educational plans that are incorporated with learning themes. Teachers mentioned that they educate children about safety in everyday activities. They also provide training sessions to help children acquire safety skills, and collaborate with parents and specialists in the community to enrich their safety education program. Difficulties were experienced by teachers when children did not seem to understand the importance of safety education. They made efforts to comply with the regulations for safety education, but felt that keeping track of the time for safety education and preparing documents for evaluation aggravated their difficulties. They also reported that lack of safety experience centers in the community acted as a barrier to effective safety education for young children. The teachers felt that more programs and hands-on materials for safety education need to be developed. Further, the regulation and evaluation system for safety education in kindergarten needs to be revised. They also expressed the need for easy access to safety experience centers in the community to strengthen children’s competency in safety.
