Abstract
This study aimed to examine the growth trajectories of difficulties in the executive function and school adjustment from the first to fourth grade of elementary school and the effects of peer play behaviors measured from the age four to six, on their parallel latent growth modeling process. We analyzed the data from the 5th-11th year of the Korea Youth Panel Study. The results were as follows. Difficulties in the executive function increased from the first to third grade and decreased in the fourth grade of elementary school. School adaptation increased from the first to fourth grade. Both growth trajectories indicated significant and mutual relationships. The more young children had interacted with the peers in playing, the better they adapted to school life in the first grade. The more they had interfered in peers’ playing, the more they experienced difficulties in the executive function but the less they adapted to school life in the first grade. Those children who were disconnected from playing with peers tended to experience more difficulties of the execution function. They adapted to school in the first grade at lesser degrees, and experienced a higher rate of change in school adaptation. Based on these findings, we discussed implications to facilitate the development of children's executive function and adaptation in the first four years of elementary school via the promotion of interactive peer play behaviors in early childhood.
