Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the moderating effect of peer play interaction on the relationship between young children’s academic ability and their executive function difficulties. The subjects of this study were a total of 867 children who participated in the 7th and 8th years of the Korean Children Panel of Korea Institute of Child Care and Education. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 and Process Macro 4.0. As a result of this study, first, there were a significant positive correlation between young children’s academic ability and peer play interaction, and negative correlations among executive function difficulties, young children’s academic ability and peer play interaction. Second, Peer play interaction moderated the relationship between young children’s academic ability and their executive function. The findings showed that when peer play interaction was low, the predictive power of academic ability for executive function difficulties was strong. When peer play interaction was high, the amount of change in executive function difficulties according to academic ability was relatively small, and there was a moderating effect of peer play interaction. It is meaningful that this study provided a valid basis for the direction of continuity between kindergarten and elementary school by revealing the moderating effect of peer play interaction in the relationship between young children’s academic ability and their executive function
