Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the phenomenological meaning of young children’s face mask wearing in a kindergarten under this prolonged COVID-19 pandemic. For this purpose, from April to July 2021, the researcher collected data on the phenomena that occurred while nine 4-year-olds wore masks at the kindergarten attached to Daejeon A Elementary School. The data consisted of participant observations, interviews, photographs, children’s drawings, and researcher's journal. Five themes were derived through the hermeneutic phenomenological approach: 'a mask that my body became familiar with, but still strange’, 'a means of expressing oneself’, 'awareness of relationship through masks’, and 'mask-wearing followed by internalized fear’. This study will provide implications for understanding young children who are constructing the meaning of life in their own ways despite the COVID-19 situation and suggesting support for young children during this pandemic.
