Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of fathers’ reflective functioning, physical activity, and communicative intentions on children’s participation in rough-and-tumble play. The study involved 60 father-child pairs, with children aged 36 to 48 months, residing in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon. The findings revealed several key points: First, no significant differences were found in fathers’ reflective functioning, physical activity, communicative intentions, or children’s play participation based on the children’s gender. Second, fathers’ certainty regarding their children’s mental states positively influenced the children’s responsiveness during play, while the fathers’ levels of physical activity positively influenced the children’s initiative in play. Among the various communicative intentions exhibited by fathers, directive, teaching-explanatory, and reactive intentions negatively impacted the duration of children’s play. Conversely, fathers’ play-facilitating intentions had a positive effect on the children’s responsiveness and enjoyment during play. To enhance children’s participation and engagement in rough-and-tumble play with their fathers, it is crucial for fathers to accurately understand their children’s behaviors and emotions, engage in active physical activity, and communicate with a facilitative rather than directive, teaching-explanatory, or reactive intention.
