Abstract
This study aimed to examine the mediating role of infants’ peer interactions play in the effects of maternal parenting stress on childhood executive functioning, and the infant gender’s moderation on mediating effects. For this purpose, data from the 7th and 8th waves of the 2014 Korean Panel Survey on Korean Children (PSKC) was observed. The SPSS 21.0 and PROCESS Macro (version 4.2) (Hayes, 2022) Models 1 and 14 were employed for descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, moderation, mediation, and controlled mediation analyses. The results showed that maternal parenting stress in infancy had a direct effect on executive functioning in childhood and that infants’ peer interactions played a mediating role in this relationship. This mediating effect was moderated by infant gender, suggesting that peer interaction is an important factor in the development of executive functioning in boys. It was found that boys are more likely to be negatively affected by self-regulation, attention shifting, and goal-directed behavior when they have less playful interactions with peers.
