Abstract
The objective of this study was to assess the impact of early childhood educators’ beliefs regarding play and the characteristics of their professional support environments on their efficacy in teaching through play. The sample was 293 lead early childhood educators in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, and other locales across Korea. Descriptive statistical analyses, independent samples t-tests, Pearson correlation assessments, and multiple regression analyses were employed. The findings were the following. First, significant variances were identified among background characteristics of early childhood educators, such as play beliefs, professional support environment, and play teaching efficacy, contingent upon the specific subgroup. Second, both the educators’ beliefs about play and the professional support environment exerted significant influences on their efficacy in play-based teaching. Within the realm of play beliefs, the dimension of play support demonstrated the most pronounced effect on teaching efficacy in play contexts. For professional support environment, the provision of opportunities for professional learning and development significantly impacted play teaching efficacy. In summary, substantial relationships were identified among early childhood educators’ beliefs about play, the nature of their professional support environments, and their efficacy. Both the beliefs regarding play and the professional support environment emerged as critical determinants of play teaching efficacy.
