Abstract

This study aims to discover the unique identities of children by re-viewing photographs that capture their play, moving beyond diagnosis and assessment confined to disability labels. By observing children as they are within the entangled life of the classroom, this research sought to reveal how individuality emerges in shared daily experiences. The fieldwork was conducted in a specialized daycare center for children with disabilities located in City G, where a dedicated teacher strives to implement a play-based curriculum. From October to December 2024, weekly visits were made to the classroom to document daily play scenes through photographs and conduct short-term re-views of these images. Thereafter until April 2025, the participating teacher and the researcher engaged in long-term re-views of the photographs collected throughout the year, aiming to identify patterns, preferences, and relational dynamics among the children. The findings show that children’s play scenes are richly interwoven with past experiences, memories, materials, peers, families, and the local community. Within these relationships, children expressed and expanded their unique identities. This study indicates that re-visiting play photographs in disability-specialized early childhood settings facilitates the recognition of children’s uniqueness, promoting respect and hospitality toward difference. It suggests the potential for open perspectives and generative entanglements.
