Abstract

This study aimed to explore factors related to young children’s externalizing problem behaviors, focusing on age, gender, and family resilience. Data were collected from 252 caregivers of 3- to 5-year-old children. The analyses were conducted to examine differences in externalizing behaviors according to age and gender, as well as the effects of family resilience on such behaviors. The results revealed the following. First, there were significant differences in externalizing problem behaviors depending on children’s age, while no significant differences were found by gender. Second, family resilience negatively influenced externalizing problem behaviors. In particular, the communication process, a subfactor of family resilience was negatively associated with aggression, a subfactor of externalizing problem behaviors. These findings suggest that a family systems approach can contribute to reducing young children’s externalizing problem behaviors. In particular, for families with 3-year-old children who show higher levels of externalizing problems, programs designed to enhance family resilience—especially improving communication process, may serve as effective intervention strategies.
