Abstract
This study explores the longitudinal changes in academic ability after elementary school entry. It examined whether differences exist between boys and girls in the influence of pre-academic abilities and school readiness on these changes. The analysis was based on latent growth modeling of data from the 8th to 10th waves of the Korean Child Panel. The results revealed a nonlinear change model, with academic ability being the lowest in the 2nd grade after school entry. The conditional model analysis using pre-academic variables from the 7th wave showed that school readiness before entry did not significantly influence subsequent academic ability for either boys or girls. However, a gender difference was observed in the impact of pre-academic abilities on the rate of change in academic ability after school entry. Higher pre-academic abilities were correlated with lesser change in academic ability only in girls. Accordingly, the necessity of tailored support based on the gender of children was proposed.
