Abstract
This study investigated the longitudinal mediating effect of children’s externalizing behaviors in the relationship between peer play interactions and maternal parenting stress. The data were drawn from the fifth to seventh waves of longitudinal data of the Panel Study on Korean Children by the Korea Institute of Child Care and Education. Results from the autoregressive cross-lagged modeling demonstrated the following. First, peer play interactions, children’s externalizing behaviors, and maternal parenting stress at an earlier point significantly predicted peer play interactions, children’s externalizing behaviors, and maternal parenting stress at a later point respectively. Second, evidence for reciprocity in the peer play interactionexternalizing behaviors relationship, and children’s externalizing behaviors-maternal parenting stress relationship was established, while the evidence for reciprocity in the peer play interaction-maternal parenting stress relationship was not found. Third, cross-age associations among the variables were observed: negative peer play interactions at an earlier point significantly predicted higher maternal parenting stress at a later point, and vice-versa with the moderation effect of children’s externalizing behaviors. The results of this study may help to facilitate supportive parent education in preschool settings to enhance peer competence, protect against externalizing behaviors, and reduce maternal parenting stress.
