Abstract
This study investigates maternal play interaction in the association between maternal parenting stress and children’s executive function. The subjects of the study were 307 4-year-old and 5-year-old children and their mothers living in the metropolitan area. The results of the study are as follows: First, the maternal parenting stress showed a negative correlation with both the maternal play interaction and children’s executive function. There was a positive correlation between the maternal play interaction and children’s executive function. Second, it was found that the maternal play interaction played a mediating role in the relationship between the maternal parenting stress and children’s executive function. The results of this study recognize that the early parenting environment is important in relation to executive function in infancy, and suggest that a positive parenting environment and early intervention measures are necessary for the development of desirable executive function.
