Abstract
This study aimed to examine the effects of forest experience activities on young children’s emotional development, including stress, self-regulation, resilience, and temperament. Sixty five-year-old children (30 in the experimental group and 30 in the control group) were selected from two daycare centers in Gyeonggi Province. The experimental group participated in forest experience activities for 20 weeks, while the control group participated in educational activities centered on the Nuri Curriculum for the same period. Stress, self-regulation, resilience, and temperament were measured pre- and post-intervention. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, independent-samples t-test, and multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) using SPSS 25.0. The results showed no significant differences between the two groups before the intervention. However, after the intervention, the experimental group showed significantly reduced stress and negative affect, and significantly improved emotional self-regulation and resilience compared to the control group. These results suggest that forest experience activities can be an effective educational resource for promoting young children’s emotional development, This study is meaningful in that it emphasizes the importance of operating programs that utilize nature-friendly environments and programs in early childhood education.
