데리다의 세계주의 구상과 무조건적 환대의 생성적 가능성

초록

세계화 현상은 철학으로 하여금 모더니티와 계몽의 유산에 대한 근본적인 사유를 다시금 요청한다. 이러한 맥락에서 본고는 데리다의 세계주의에 대한 진단 및 해설과 해체주의가 제시하고 있는 대안을 고찰해 보고자 한다. 세계주의는 계몽의 유산으로서 데리다의 사유가 갖는 특징을 잘 보여 주는 주제라고 할 수 있다. 본고에서는 먼저 데리다의 세계주의 구상에 있어 이론적 기초라고 할 수 있는 개념으로서 해체, 경계, 그리고 아포리아를 살펴본다. 다음으로 세계주의적 지향점에서 데리다의 아포리아 개념이 갖는 생성적 가능성을 보여 주기 위해, 무조건적 용서, 무조건적 환대 개념을 고찰한다. 특히 관용 개념의 한계를 넘어서는 환대 개념을 통해 주인과 손님의 관계와 이방인의 고유한 속성을 제시하도록 한다. 데리다에게 있어서 아포리아적 사유는 해체가 지속적으로 가능하기 위한 당위적인 전제조건으로서 이해된다. 그에게 있어서 관용의 한계는 법과 정의, 조건적 용서와 무조건적 용서, 조건적 환대와 무조건적 환대 사이에서 펼쳐지는 아포리아적 사유를 통해 아포리아의 생성적 가능성이 지속적으로 열려져 있는 상태 그 자체를 의미한다고 볼 수 있을 것이다. 이러한 데리다의 아포리아적 사유는 그의 해체주의를 회의주의적이거나 허무적이라기보다는 긍정적이고 생성적인 가능성을 강조하는 미래지향적 관점으로 이해할 수 있도록 한다. 나아가 데리다의 세계주의 구상의 구체적인 논의의 지평으로서 테러리즘과 9/11에 대한 그의 해체적 비평, 그리고 세계주의가 나아가야 할 ‘또 다른’ 지향점으로서 데리다가 제시하는 도래할 유럽의 약속을 고찰하도록 한다. 데리다의 세계주의 구상에 대한 논의를 통해, 모더니즘과 포스트모더니즘이라는 상이한 이론적 전통이 세계적 지평의 실천적 논의에서 접점을 이룰 수 있는 가능성을 생각해 볼 수 있게 된다. 이를 통해 모더니즘과 포스트모더니즘을 변증하는 세계주의에 대한 진정한 의미의 반성적 모더니즘이 가능하리라고 생각한다.

Abstract

The phenomenon of globalization requests a philosophical consideration of the Enlightenment and modernity from a new perspective. This paper studies Derrida’s understanding, diagnosis, and explanation of cosmopolitanism. Cosmopolitanism is the topic which shows a key characteristic of the thought of Derrida as the legacy of the Enlightenment. First, as a theoretical foundation, this paper examines the fundamental concepts in Derrida’s thought, including ‘deconstruction’, ‘boundary’, and ‘aporia’. Furthermore, this paper analyses the concepts of ‘unconditional forgiveness’ and ‘unconditional hospitality’ to show the positive possibilities of Derrida’s aporetic thinking in his cosmopolitan ideal. Especially, the concept of hospitality provides an opportunity to reflect on the relationship between the host and the guest, and the inherent characteristic of the stranger. For Derrida, aporetic thinking is a precondition for continuous deconstruction. Therefore, the threshold of tolerance here is the condition itself where the positive possibilities of aporia stand continually open between ‘law and justice’, ‘conditional forgiveness and unconditional forgiveness’, and ‘conditional hospitality and unconditional hospitality’. Derrida’s aporetic thinking helps us understand that his deconstructivism is positive and future-oriented rather than skeptical or nihilistic. Moreover, as practical aspects of Derrida’s cosmopolitanism, this paper considers his deconstructive critique of terrorism and 9/11 terror, and the promise of ‘Europe-to-come’ as the other heading which cosmopolitanism should aim for. From Derrida’s understanding of cosmopolitanism, we can discuss the potential for the nexus between modernism and postmodernism in the global dimension.
