Abstract

In the book of Ezekiel, Ezekiel becomes a man who cannot speak even though he is called as a prophet. Therefore, Ezekiel could not prophesy to the inhabitants of Jerusalem even though he saw the evil deeds of the inhabitants of Jerusalem through vision. Also, Ezekiel failed to play the role of mediator between YHWH and the Jews. However, soon after the fall of Jerusalem, Ezekiel's mouth opened, and Ezekiel prophesied the restoration of Israel and the temple. The book of Ezekiel reveals that it is YHWH's will that Ezekiel's mouth is closed and opened. It is also YHWH's will that Ezekiel did not play any role until the fall of Jerusalem. Of course, the fall of Jerusalem is YHWH's judgment. In contrast, Ezekiel with an open mouth presents a blueprint for the future restoration of Israel and the temple. The book of Ezekiel reveals that the hope of restoration was promised to the exiles. The book of Ezekiel uses Ezekiel's mouth as a tool for the theological justification of the exiles by revealing that YHWH was on the side of the exiles in the context of the conflict that existed between the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the exiles.
