이광수의 「문학이란 하오」는 한국문학사에서 근대적 문학 개념을 정립한 최초의 본격적인 문학론이다. 이 글은 문학을 영어 Literature의 역어이자 정의 분자로 정의함으로써 한국근대문학에서 과거와는 다른 문학 개념을 처음으로 개진하고 있다. 특히 이 글은 중화 중심의 제국질서가 붕괴되고 서구 열강이 지배하는 민족 간 경쟁과 각축의 시대로 진입하는 역사적 전환기에 이루어진 문학의 근대적 전환을 담아내고 있다. 본 연구는 그동안 이 글에 대한 기존 연구들이 일본과 한국 간의 영향과 차용의 관계에 치중한 점이 없지 않았음을 비판적으로 검토하는 한편, 이 글에서 개진된 문학 개념, 특히 지정의론의 형성을 영국과 스코틀랜드를 포함하는 초국적 문학장, 즉 세계문학공간 속에서 살펴보고자 한다. 특히 이런 확장의 목적은 영향과 기원에 대한 기존 연구를 강화하기 위한 것이 아니라 이광수 문학론이 식민과 제국으로 구성된 초국적 문학장과의 관계 속에서 형성된 것임을 보여주고 그 고유한 성격을 드러내는 데 있다. 물론 이 문학장 속에서 이루어진 초국적 문화번역의 과정들은 이광수에게 투명하지 않았던 것 같다. 하지만 이런 불투명성은 문화번역의 고유한 현상임과 동시에 이광수 문학론의 새롭고 독창적인 성격을 드러내는 조건이 되기도 한다.
Abstract
Yi Kwang-su’s Munhak-iran Hao has been considered the first and most important essay to present the conception of modern literature in Korea. The essay suggests the modern conception of literature, which differs considerably from the previous traditional conception of literature, by characterizing literature as the translation of the English word ‘literature’ and regarding the element of emotion as its essential character. Above all, this essay shows the modern formation of literature in a historical period of transitioning from the order of an empire to that of a nation. This paper aims to examine critically the tendency of existing studies to focus on the relationships of literary influences and borrowings between two nations, Korea and Japan. Moreover, it will trace the conceptual sources of literature developed in the essay, namely the formation of the theory of knowledge-emotion-will in the transnational field of literature, including England, Scotland, and Japan. However, the aim of this work is not simply to further the inquiry into the influence of Yi’s literary theory. Rather, it is to show how his literary theory is shaped by cultural translation in the field of transnational literary theory. For him, the unequal processes of cultural translation in this literary field seem unclear. However, this opacity shapes not only the archive for cultural translation but also becomes the important condition for disclosing the unique characteristics of Yi’s theory of literature.
