Abstract

This paper examines the meaning of justice in Kim Soo-young's poems during April 19th period, with important reference to the work of Walter Benjamin and Jacques Derrida, who discussed the contradictory relationship among violence, law and justice. This is because the contradiction of the relationship among them provides not only politics but also revolution and justice, so it helps provide an effective interpretation perspective for reading Kim's poems. Kim’s poems, written around the time of April 19th, strongly show impeachment for the existing ruling power and hope for new values, so the interpretation of these is a clue to overcome the contradictory relationship among violence, law and justice. Because the dichotomous logic of conditional law and unconditional justice is a logic that puts justice on a transcendental horizon, it makes it impossible to reason properly the contradictory relationship between law and justice. The logic that violence exists as an exception within the law is the logic that applies equally to justice as the source of the law. In order to properly grasp the contradictory relationship between law and justice, it is necessary to devise a way to criticize the order of life here and now without assuming an external transcendental horizon. In this paper, it was proposed to combine the immanence and transcendence with a dialectical method in a way to effectively think about the relationship between law and justice, but this is based on Kim's poetic thought. As a poet, Kim asked how revolution is possible, and in a similar context, what justice is. Although it was not easy to answer, he tried to keep the question strong and express it as poetics. Justice and revolution are things that we already know about in the ideological form, but have not yet realized in reality. But a soft but strong belief in those ideologies will eventually change reality. This paper aims to renew and deepen the perspective of research to Kim’s poems by examining them from the viewpoint of violence, law and justice, and from the perspective of politics and revolution that can encompass the three at the same time. Of course, the interpretation of Kim's poetic response needs to be expanded through subsequent approaches to the latter part of his poems. How the demand for a new definition is expressed as poetry, and what practical response the poetic expression gets, is because the interpretation of the latter poetic journey to history and discovery and love of others needs to be added. In this regard, we intend to deepen and expand the viewpoint raised by this paper through subsequent research.
