Abstract

Lee Seung-hoon's poetic theory is a record that begins with a confession about his personal life and explores how new aesthetics can be formed and created through poetry and art. Of course, from today's perspective, it may seem like a summary of widely known knowledge, but his efforts to find new realms in art cannot be ignored. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Lee maintained his image from the beginning of his poetic journey until his death as a poet and poetic theorist who realized the limitations of the times while also trying to overcome them. The formation process of Lee Seung-hoon's early poetic theory can be summarized as the discovery of anxiety and loneliness, the attribution of meaning to them, and the subsequent exploration toward language. This may have originated from his personal experience, namely, the anxious growth process due to his father's frequent absence, but by elevating such experiences literarily and deepening them into the fundamental foundation of the times, he came to devise and pursue a more advanced literary vision on his own. The process of forming Lee's early poetics is a process of moving from the individual to the universal, the whole, and at the same time, a process of deepening and expanding from the extremely personal dimension of emotion to a broader meaning. This all stems from a profound plan to consider literature more theoretically and scientifically, and is the result of intensively studying the cutting-edge literary theories of the time and artists and philosophers. Through Lee's worries, wanderings, and explorations, we can learn about the cutting-edge literary thinking of the time and infer the Korean interpretation process of it. It is not a one-sided imitation and harvest of Western theories, but rather a search and exploration based on one's own existential needs, which is an important literary achievement in itself and, at the same time, provides a point for reflective thinking even today, so it is a meaningful work.
