이승훈 시인은 한국시사에서 활발한 창작활동과 함께 고유한 시론을 포섭한 시인 중 하나이다. 모더니즘에서 포스트모더니즘 그리고 불교철학을 아우르는 그의 이론은 내면에 대한 집요한 탐구로 수행된 창작과 결합되어 치밀한 논리적 정합성을 갖는 미학을 형성한다. 동시에 이승훈의 시학은 작품 해석에 있어 고착화되거나 해석 지평의 한계로 작동하기도 한다. 까닭에 기존 시학의 범주에서 벗어나 다양한 분야의 방법론을 적용함으로써 해석의 외연을 넓힐 필요가 있다. 본고가 주목하고자 하는 것은 이승훈의 시에서 나타나는 산문성이다. 산문성은 기존 시학에서 넓은 의미로 다루어졌기에 ‘에세이즘’이라는 명칭으로 산문시 형식의 범위를 더욱 좁히고 그의 작품을 통해 그 특징을 규명하고자 한다. 이승훈의 시적 정신은 시에 대한 관습적 담론과 치열하게 싸우면서 시의 범주를 갱신한 부정 정신에서 비롯된 것이며 이는 형식적 자유로움을 추구 하는 에세이의 특징으로 연결된다. 그 특징으로 자아 탐구에서 비롯된 주체의 부정을 통해 고립주의에서 벗어난 이후 타자와의 만남을 꼽을 수 있다. 타자와 다양한 대화를 나누고 여러 행위를 통해 관계를 만들어가는 과정은 진리 추구보다는 난삽성을 특징으로 하는 에세이의 성격에 맞닿는다. 또한 이러한 타자를 발견할 수 있는 공간을 살필 필요가 있다. 그의 시적 공간은 미학적 공간이 아니라 평범하고 특별할 것이 없는 일상적 에세이의 공간이다. 따라서 기존 시의 방법론이 아닌 산문 혹은 소설적인 방법론을 통해 접근한다면 후기 이승훈 시의 새로운 모습을 발견할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
Lee Seung-hun is one of the poets in Korean poetry history who has been actively engaged in creative activities while incorporating his own unique poetic theory. His theory, which encompasses modernism, postmodernism, and Buddhist philosophy, combines with his creative work, which is the result of his relentless exploration of the inner self, to form an aesthetic with a meticulous logical consistency. At the same time, Lee Seung-hun’s poetics can also function as a fixed interpretation or a limitation of the interpretive horizon in the interpretation of his works. Therefore, it is necessary to expand the scope of interpretation by applying methodologies from various fields beyond the existing categories of poetics. This paper focuses on the prose-like quality of Lee Seung-hun’s poetry. Since prose-like quality has been broadly addressed in existing poetics, this paper narrows the scope of prose poetry to “essayism” and seeks to clarify its characteristics through his works. Lee Seung-hun’s poetic spirit stems from a spirit of negation that fiercely fights against conventional discourse on poetry and renews the category of poetry, which is connected to the characteristic of essays that pursue formal freedom. Among its characteristics, we can point to the encounter with others after escaping from isolationism through the negation of the subject derived from self-xploration. The process of engaging in diverse dialogues with others and building relationships through various actions aligns with the nature of essays, which are characterized by complexity rather than the pursuit of truth. Additionally, it is necessary to examine the space where such others can be found. His poetic space is not an aesthetic space but an ordinary, unremarkable, everyday essayistic space. Therefore, by approaching it through prose or novelistic methodologies rather than traditional poetic methodologies, one can discover the new aspects of Lee Seung-hun’s later poetry.
