미디어를 통해 수용된 일반대중의 범죄인식이 범죄두려움에 미치는 영향

이 연구는 중형주의 입법 남발 등 부정적 결과를 초래할 수 있는 범죄두려움에미치는 요인에 대해서 기존의 범죄학에서 논의되어 왔던 범죄두려움 발생요인에대한 연구와 달리 미디어 접촉을 통해 형성된 일반대중의 부정확한 범죄인식이범죄두려움을 느끼게 할 것이라는 가정하는 문화계발이론(the cultivation thesis) 중심으로 범죄두려움에 미디어가 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 검증하였다. 연구의목적을 달성하기 위하여 종속변수로 재산범죄두려움, 대인범죄두려움으로 설정하였고 독립변수로 재산범죄, 대인범죄 미디어 노출과 성별, 학력, 연령, 소득을 설정하고 분석하였다. 분석결과, 재산범죄ㆍ 대인범죄에 대하여 미디어를 통한 노출의 증가가 범죄두려움에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났고 취약성 중 성별만이 재산범죄와 대인범죄에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과를바탕으로 시민들의 범죄두려움 문제 해결을 위하여 미디어의 역할이 중요함을 확인하였고, 특히 범죄두려움을 감소시키기 위하서는 범죄에 대한 자극적인 언론의보도를 지양할 필요가 있음을 지적하였다.

Abstract

Unlike previous studies, the cultivation thesis assumes that the general public's inaccurate perception of crime created through media contact will make them feel fear of the crime. This study empirically verifies the influence of media on fear of crime based on the cultivation thesis. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, fear of property crime and fear of personal crime were set as dependent variables. Exposure to property crime, exposure to personal crime, media exposure, sex, education, age, and income were set and analyzed as independent variables. The results showed that increased media exposures to property crimes and personal crimes significantly affected the fear of crime, and only sex among the vulnerability factors affected fear of property crimes and fear of personal crimes. Given the results of the current study, we identified that the role of the media is important for solving the fear of crime issues among citizens. In particular, it is imperative to control provocative media reports about crime in order to reduce the fear of crime.
