이 연구에서는 문화계발효과와 관련하여 다음과 같은 세 가지의 연구문제에대하여 경험적으로 검증해 보고자 하였다. 첫째, Gerbner의 문화계발효과를 전제로 미디어이용이 범죄증감 및 추세 인식, 범죄에 대한 두려움에 미치는 영향을 검증하고자 하였다. 둘째, 미디어 효과 변수를 미디어 뉴스의 총시청량과범죄보도의 접촉경험으로 구분하여 각 독립변수가 미치는 효과를 알아보고자하였다. 마지막으로, 텔레비전과 함께 인터넷의 영향을 측정하여 뉴미디어시대에서도 여전히 문화계발효과가 유효한 것인가를 알아보고자 하였다. 연구의 목적을 위하여 전국 6개 지역에 재학 중인 대학생을 대상으로 자기보고식 설문조사를 실시하고 최종 699명의 응답을 분석에 사용하였다. 이상의 연구문제에 대한 분석결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 통제변인 가운데 경찰에 대한 신뢰는 범죄증감 및 범죄추세 인식에 영향을 미쳤으며 성별은 범죄에 대한 인식과 관련한 각 변수에 모두 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 이와 같은 통제변인은 미디어관련 변수를 추가한후에도 유의미한 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 범죄증감 및 범죄 추세에 대한 인식에는 미디어의 총 시청량 보다는 범죄보도 접촉경험이 정(+)적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타나 미디어시청이 비선별적이며 습관적이라는 Gerbner의 가정은지지되지 않는 것으로 확인되었다. 셋째, 텔레비전의 이용은 범죄인식에 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타난 반면 인터넷을 통한 범죄보도 접촉경험은 범죄증감 및 추세 인식에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타나 뉴미디어의 효과에 대하여 부분적으로 확인할 수 있었다. 마지막으로 범죄에 대한 두려움에는 미디어관련 변수가 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 분석결과를 토대로 이 연구의 시사점 및 한계에 대하여 논의하였다.
Abstract
TheCultivationTheoryintroducedbyGerbnerinthe1970sisofgreatinterestto manyresearcherswhoareresearchingtheinfluenceofmediaonpublic.Withinthe domesticcriminology,mediahasbeendealtwithasafactorwhichcontributestothe publicfearofcrime,howevertherehasbeenalackofconsiderationoftheCultivation Theoryandthenewmediaenvironment.Therefore,inthisresearch,wehavedealtwith 3mainissuesderivedfromtheCultivationTheory.Firstly,wehaveresearchedthe influenceoftheCultivationTheoryonpublicperceptionofcrime.Secondly,wehave differentiatedbetweenthetotalnumberofhoursspentonwatchingthenewsandthe hoursspentonwatchingthenewsspecificallyoncrimes.Lastly,inordertoinvestigate whethertheCultivationTheorystillappliestothenewmediaera,wehaveresearched the influence of the internet on public perception of crime. Thefollowingsummariestheresultsfromtheresearchthatwehaveperformed. Firstly,withinthecontrolvariables,thepublictrustonpolicehadaninfluenceon thenumberofcrimesanditstrend.Genderplayedasubstantialroleincreatingthe public perception of crime in every situation. Secondly, the public perception on the number of crimes and its trends is significantlyimpactedbythenumberoftimesapersonisexposedtonewsspecifically on crimes rather than the total number of hours a person is exposed to media. ThereforeGerbner'stheorythatmediaisnon-selectiveandishabitual cannotbe supported. Thirdly,imagestransmittedthroughpopulartelevisionmediaprovedtohaveno significantinfluenceonpublicperceptionofcrime. Incontrast, exposuretocrime imagesfrominternetprovedtohaveinfluenceonpublicperceptionofcrimewhich demonstratestheimpactofthenewmediaeraonpublic.Lastly,thevarietyoftypesof media exposure does not have impact on public fear of crime. Basedupontheresultsfromtheresearch,wehavediscussedtheimplicationand limitation of the research.
