범죄 문제에 대해 사람들은 현상을 실재보다 과장하여 인식하는 체계적인 편향을가지고 있다. 범죄발생 추세가 안정적이거나 심지어 감소하더라도 사람들은 범죄가증가하고 있다고 평가하는 경향을 뚜렷하게 나타낸다. 이 논문은 범죄발생 추세에 대한 평가에서 발견되는 사람들의 과장-편향된 인식을 주목하고 이것을 범죄의 두려움을 설명하는 요인의 하나로 고려하여 실증 분석함으로써 범죄의 두려움에 대해 기존연구에서 충분히 검토되지 않은 새로운 설명의 단서를 제공하고자 하였다. 범죄에 대한 두려움은 다양한 요인에 의해 설명되어 왔는데, 선행 연구에서는 범죄피해 경험, 취약성 가설, 지역사회의 무질서, 공식・비공식 사회통제 등을 주목하였다. 그런데 범죄의 두려움은 범죄 현상에 대한 사람들의 개별적이고 주관적인 반응이므로 두려움을 느끼는 사람의 주체적이고 능동적인 정신작용에 따라 달라질 수 있다. 기존 연구에서 검토된 요인만으로는 범죄의 두려움을 설명하는데 한계가 있으며, 범죄의 두려움을 보다 잘 이해하기 위해서는 객관적 현실에 대한 주관적 의미 구성을 함께 고려해야 한다. 분석에는 한국형사정책연구원의 범죄피해조사 자료를 사용하였으며, 범죄 발생 추세에 대한 과장-편향된 인식을 설명 요인 가운데 하나로 포함하였다. 회귀분석 결과를 보면 범죄의 두려움을 설명하는데 있어서 기존 연구에서 검토되어온 요인들과 함께 범죄추세를 과장하여 인식하는 태도 역시 유의미한 변수의 하나라는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 범죄에 대한 과장되거나 편향된 인식이 막연한 두려움을 증폭시킨다. 이 논문은 분석 결과에 근거하여 기존의 연구에서 충분히 고려되지 못한 인지적 요인이 범죄의 두려움을 설명하는 독립적인 요인으로 고려되어야 함을 주장하였다.
Abstract
If you examine people's assessment of crime issues, you can discover that people have a systematic bias that exaggerate the phenomenon of crime beyond real existence. Even though the trend of crime is stable or even declining, people clearly show the tendency to evaluate crime is increasing. The study examined the exaggeration bias found in assessing the trend of crime and considered it as one of the factors explaining the fear of crime. It was intended to provide a clue to the new explanation that was not fully examined in previous studies about the fear of crime. Fear of crime has been explained by various factors. In previous studies, the focus was on criminal victim experiences, vulnerability hypothesis, social disorder, formal and informal social controls, etc. The fear of crime, however, is an individual and subjective reaction to the criminal phenomenon, which can vary depending on the subjective and active mental effects of those who fear it. In order to better understand the fear of crime, objective reality and subjective awareness of it should be considered together, while the factors examined in previous studies have limitations to explain the fear of crime. The study used a crime victim survey data from the Korea Institute of Criminology and analyzed the impact of misperception of crime on the fear of crime as emotional reactions. The results of the regression analysis showed that misperception of crime, along with variables reviewed in previous studies, was also one of the significant variables that explain the fear of crime. Biased or exaggerated perceptions of crime amplify a vague fear of crime. Based on the analysis results, the study argued that cognitive factors that were not considered properly in previous studies should be considered as a significant independent variable of explaining the fear of crime.
