Abstract
In the nineteenth-century, writers of Italian opera tapped into a compositional template, “the conventional form” (la solita forma); this model designated the architectural principles and poetic choices used in various set pieces. With a musical career spanning decades, Verdi not only relied heavily on this tradition, but also developed and deviated from it over time to better pursue his dramatic goals. This essay discusses the presence of the conventional form in the five duets of his Rigoletto; the opera, initiating a new stylistic period for the composer, manifests treatments of the conventional form ranging from literal adoption through its inventive application to departure from the form. This is particularly evident in the opera's duets, which are emphasized by the composer as the narrative's primary vehicle for dramatic development; also, the presence of the three duets is a refraction of the “filial relationship” between Rigoletto and Gilda, the core subject and emotional center of the opera. Each duet renders the conventional form in a dramatically distinct manner. The duet between Gilda and Duke in Act 1 is a stolid, non-innovative presentation of the conventional form, corresponding to the cliched development of the characters' relationship. The duets for Rigoletto and Gilda in Acts 1 and 2 are both more or less structured in the conventional form, but the Leitmotiv-like treatment of the curse motive privileges dramatic content over musical formality. This expansion of the boundaries of the conventional form is taken even further in the duet for Sparafucile and Rigoletto in Act 1, and the final filial duet in Act 3; both radically depart from the conventional form, allowing Verdi to create striking dramatic immediacy and continuity. The differing approaches to the conventional form in the duets—adoption, application, and deformation—trace how Verdi experimented with received operatic traditions to gradually develop a deeper integration of music and drama.
