Abstract
In this paper, I present my research on Andrea Gabrieli’s madrigal from Ariosto’s “Orlando Furioso.” From the “Orlando”, Gabrieli chose certain texts where the sorrow of the characters is expressed, and, hence, this paper focuses on the poetic feeling of “sorrow.” Poetic feeling of “sorrow” can be classified into two musical devices: (1) Use of B♭ in Gabrieli’s madrigal, and (2) repetition of text and melody. Such musical devices were used in the madrigal for creation of tension, musical metaphor connecting the music to the emotion of sorrow and grief, distinguishment of characters, and lastly, expression of the characters’ sorrow which becomes greater in the course of time. By examining the evidence suggested above, it can be observed that Gabrieli exquisitely expresses the poetic feeling the text connotes musically.
