초록
Giuseppe Verdi is an Italian composer who emphasized not only musical performance but also theatricality in opera. In his work, music and drama complement each other. It is natural that Verdi, who empathized on the theatricality of the opera, referred to the Shakespeare plays. There are two different editions of Verdi’s Macbeth, the original libretto published in 1847 by Piave and the revision used for the production in Paris in 1865. The critics estimate that the opera based on 1865 revised edition not only presents more sophisticated musical composition than 1847 but also shows a better dramatic arrangement. This paper discusses the issues relating to the 1865 revision of the opera and its adaptation. It focuses on Giuseppe Verdi’s deletion, transformation, reduction, compressing, and adding of Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. Another focus of discussion is Verdi’s way of reconstructing and representation of Lady Macbeth.
