Abstract

Many composers have used cyclic procedures in the composition of their works, especially in multi-movement instrumental works. These cyclic procedures use musical elements or components including recurring motifs, passages, tonal schemes, and formal structures to provide cohesiveness within and among the movements. Composers created cyclic works throughout the Classical era, and one of the notable examples was made by Muzio Clementi’s Piano Sonata Opus 13/6. This paper approaches Clementi’s work as a cyclic form and relates various musical components according to their cyclic organization. The analyses demonstrate that cyclic form of Piano Sonata Opus 13/6 is achieved not only by recurring motifs and passages derived from the initial measure of the first movement, but also by phrase cadence, structures of initial and ultimate measures, harmonic progression, and method of modulation.
