Abstract

This paper explores tonal structure and formal design in three-key exposition composed by Muzio Clementi, in order to reveal how he perceived a new trend that is flourished from the beginning of Classic era to the 19th century, and how he applied, and transformed into the sonata form of his piano works, particularly analyzing with his piano sonatas Op. 25/5 and Op. 40/2. One is able to define ‘three-key exposition’ as an exposition that outlines three tonal centers, the second and the last of which appear in the second theme space, and thus ⅰ-Ⅲ-ⅴ tonal centers are normal in minor key. The three-key exposition sonata differs from that of the typical sonata form, wherein only one tonal center (V or III) is existed in the second theme space. What Clementi builds up is ‘transpositional passage’, which enables him to change tonality between the Second themes so that two distinct tonal centers are available in the second theme space.
