Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze research trends focusing on the collaboration between pre- and in-service teachers and to identify insights applicable to music education. To achieve this, 17 research studies published between 2003 and 2023 were selected, and their content was examined using the narrative review method. The main findings of this research were as follows. Firstly, various models were utilized for collaboration between pre- and in-service teachers, including co-teaching, university-school partnership, research projects, learning communities, and cyber collaboration. Secondly, when examining the content of collaborative structures, it was found that collaboration between pre- and in-service teachers was most commonly utilized in subjects such as mathematics and science, predominantly at the elementary school level. The duration of collaboration ranged from a few weeks to as long as two years. Thirdly, the collaborative process between pre- and in-service teachers had a significant impact not only on pre-service teachers but also on in-service teachers. Fourthly, factors facilitating the effectiveness of collaborative processes included continuous and prolonged dialogues, different expertise of pre- and in-service teachers, and the establishment of goals and targets for research and observation. Hindering factors included a lack of awareness among in-service teachers regarding the importance of collaborative teaching and biases in teacher education. Fifthly, based on the results analyzed in this study, implications for music education were identified. These include leveraging mutual expertise between pre- and in-service music teachers through the application of new theories learned in teacher education institutions, utilizing teaching internships linked to practical experiences, fostering the professional growth of in-service music teachers through collaboration with pre-service music teachers, and more research focusing on the collaboration between pre- and in-service music teachers.
