Abstract

This study examines research trends in preservice teacher education in elementary music education. A total of 82 articles published in international academic journals were analyzed, focusing on the number of studies over time, research topics, subjects, methods, and research approaches. The findings were as follows: First, research on preservice teachers in elementary music education has increased over time. Second, regarding research topics, studies on instructional methods and educational environments for preservice teachers were the most prevalent. Specifically, studies examined technology-enhanced instructional methods, including those used in online environments; teaching methods for various music fields, such as multicultural and popular music; and strategies that utilize cooperative learning. Additionally, research studies have been conducted on preservice teachers’ beliefs and attitudes toward music education and teacher identity and their perceptions of psychological factors, such as self-efficacy and confidence. Third, preservice teachers constituted the largest proportion of research subjects and came from various majors, including elementary education, music education, and special education. Furthermore, studies involving a combination of different research participants—including preservice teachers, teacher educators, in-service teachers, and elementary students—were also widely conducted. Fourth, qualitative research accounted for more than half the studies analyzed. The case study was the most frequently employed method, and other qualitative methods such as narrative inquiry, action research, ethnographic research, phenomenological research, and grounded theory were also employed. Quantitative research also made up a significant proportion of the studies reviewed. Fifth, in terms of the research approach, analytical studies were the most common, followed by studies of educational effects and comparative studies. From these findings, this study offers implications for elementary music teacher education in three key areas: teacher education in technology-enhanced environments, authenticity of multicultural music teacher education, and the expansion and diversification of research subjects in preservice teacher studies in elementary music education.
