Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences and perceived needs of pre-service and in-service music teachers regarding practice-linked courses and to examine the educational significance of these courses and directions for improvement within teacher education programs. In-depth interviews were conducted with three pre-service music teachers and three in-service music teachers, and the interview data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed, first, that participants perceived practice-linked courses as essential, practice-centered components of teacher education and valued them as learning contexts that connect university-based coursework with school-based teaching practice. Second, participants recognized that the cyclical instructional process of lesson demonstration, feedback, and reflection experienced through linkage with teaching practicum contributed to their adaptation to school contexts and the development of instructional competence. Third, participants identified several areas for improvement related to the predominance of microteaching-centered instruction, including limitations in responding to authentic classroom situations, insufficient guidance on pre-service teachers’ professional responsibility, and imbalances across competency domains. Fourth, participants emphasized that strengthening field-based competence requires the integrated development of instructional expertise, empathy and communication skills, performance-related skills, and collaboration and administrative competence. The results of this study are expected to serve as foundational data for enhancing the quality and effectiveness of practice-linked courses in music teacher education programs.
