Abstract
The purpose of music education should aim at delivering musical knowledge through diverse musical experiences, to immensely broaden the scope and quantity of students' musical encounters, and to enrich their lives. However, music appreciation classes are often notably neglected in Korean school music education. Thus, this study tried to actively implement Bennett Reimer's music education philosophy in the music appreciation classes. This study devises and executes a music appreciation course program for 5th and 6th-grade elementary students, based on Reimer's music education philosophy. This program incorporates various ‘aesthetic behaviors’, ‘musical knowledge’, and ‘musical experiences’ defined within the Reimer’s music education philosophy. It aligns with the ‘2022 revised National Curriculum of Korea’. Consequently, this researcher organized the model of appreciation classes in the sequence of ‘Exploration-Analysis- Conceptualization- Evaluation- Valuation’, and formulated and implemented multiple strategies applicable at each level. This study utilized an array of activity sheets, survey forms, and videos, analyzing them to verify the effectiveness of music appreciation classes based on Reimer’s philosophy. Consequently, they enabled students to delve into and conceptualize the intrinsic knowledge of music, namely, the various musical elements. Moreover, it facilitated students' organic acquisition of the intrinsic knowledge of music, that is, understanding of musical elements. Finally, it fostered students' interest in music and broadened their spectrum of listening experiences.
