에드워즈는 만유재신론적인 것처럼 보이는 말을 종종 했다. 예를 들면, 그는 “만물이 하나님 안에 있고 하나님은 만물 안에 있다.”고 말했다. 그래서 일부 학자들은 에드워즈가 만유재신론자라고 주장한다. 그러나 에드워즈는 역사적 개혁주의 전통의 입장을 가지고 있었다. 그는 계몽주의 시대의 인물로서 계몽주의와 대결하면서 성경과 자신이 물려받은 전통을 지키려고 노력하는 과정에서 새롭고 독특한 용어들과 표현들을 사용했다. 그 이유는 에드워즈가 기본적으로 적극적이고 강력한 하나님 중심적 사고방식을 가지고 있었기 때문이다. 에드워즈에 따르면, 하나님은 자신의 무한한 선의 충만을 전달하고 발산하기 위해서 무로부터 세계를 창조하기로 결정하셨다. 무로부터의 창조는 하나님의 자충족성, 피조물의 절대적인 의존성, 외부 세계의 실재에 대한 긍정, 그리고 하나님의 의지적 선택을 함축한다. 한편, 에드워즈는 전달과 발산을 창조의 목적이라고 주장했다. 발산을 목적론적으로 본 것이다. 이것은 발산이 곧 창조라고 보는 신플라톤주의적 견해와는 분명히 다르다. 그러므로 에드워즈는 만유재신론자가 아니다. 하나님이 자신의 무한한 선의 충만을 전달하고 발산하신다는 에드워즈의 주장은 하나님이 스스로 영광을 받으신다는 개혁주의 원리를 자신의 독특한 방식으로 표현한 것이다. 모든 것이 하나님께 속해있고 하나님은 모든 것을 향하여 자기를 드러내 보이신다는 것이 에드워즈의 기본 입장이라는 사실이 충분히 강조되어야 한다.
Abstract
Jonathan Edwards has often said some remarks that sound like panentheism. For example, he said, "All things are in him, and he in all." So some scholars claimed Edwards is a panentheist. But Edwards has confidently taken the line of the tradition of historical Reformed theology. When he had confrontation with the Enlightenment and tried to protect the Bible and the inherited tradition, he made the original and distinctive words and expressions. The reason is that Edwards has basically had the actively and strongly theocentric way of thinking. According to Edwards, God exercised his will to ccreate the world ex nihilo so as to communicate and emanate the fullness of his own infinite goodness. Creation ex nililo is deeply involved with the self-sufficiency of God, the absolute dependency of creature, the positiveness about the external world, and the arbitrary choice of God. Moreover Edwards claimed that the communication and emanation is the end of creation. He looked on the emanation as in teleology. It is obviously different from the Neoplatonic thought that regards the emanation as the creation. Therefore Edwards is nat a panentheist. That God communicate and emanate the fullness of his own infinite goodness is to express the Reformed theology principle in the distinctive method that God glorifies himself. It should be emphasized that Edwards' basic position is that all things belong to God and God displays himself toward all things.
