초록

This paper examines the role of 19th-century Welsh missionaries in the early development of Protestant missions in Korea, focusing on the ministries and relationship between Robert Jermain Thomas and Griffith John. Both served in China, but Thomas felt called to minister among the Korean people. Thomas became the first Protestant martyr in Korea, while Griffith John was the first missionary to appeal to Western society for the need for missions to Korea. Sharing a common evangelical vision and missionary strategy, the two influenced each other within the broader context of East Asian missions. Notably, John’s well-established missionary base in China had a significant impact on Thomas’s mission to Korea. After Thomas’s martyrdom, his zeal for Korean missions continued through John. Both hailing from Wales, living in the same era, and serving as co-laborers in challenging mission fields, these pioneering missionaries offer a new perspective on Korean mission history by highlighting the previously underrecognized Welsh- Korean missionary network.
