본 연구는 한국 개신교 최초의 선교사이자 순교자인 로버트 저메인 토마스(Robert Jermain Thomas)의 생애와 순교를 기존 연구에서 충분히 다루지 않은 1차 자료를 바탕으로 재조명한다. 이를통해 토마스를 둘러싼 다양한 오해와 논쟁을 비판적으로 검토하고, 그의 선교 동기와 선교 사역, 그리고 순교의 역사적 의미를 실증적으로 규명한다. 토마스는 한국 근현대사의 격변기를 거치면서 미국, 일본, 중국, 북한의 정치적 상황에 의해 제각기 다르게 서술되고 이용되었다. 이에 따라 초기 한국교회에서 토마스에게 주어졌던 순교자의 정체성은 왜곡되거나 과장되거나 희석되었다. 토마스의평가에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 가장 큰 요인은 제너럴 셔먼호와의 관계이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 토마스와 제너럴 셔먼호와 관련된 이슈들에 대해 고찰하여 사실관계를 명확히 정리한다. 토마스에 대한 평가는 제너럴 셔먼호 사건이 일어난 17일 간의 상황이 아닌 그의 생애와 당시의 국제정치적 상황을 종합적으로 고려해서 이루어진다. 본 연구는 사료적 재해석을 통해 토마스에 대한 기존의 평가와 오해를 바로잡고, 한국 기독교사에서 그의 순교가 갖는 선교신학적·역사적 의의를 객관적으로 제시하는 데 목적이 있다.
Abstract
This study reexamines the life and martyrdom of Robert Jermain Thomas, the first Protestant missionary and martyr in Korea, using primary sources that have not been sufficiently addressed in previous research. Through this approach, the study critically reviews the various misunderstandings and controversies surrounding Thomas, and empirically investigates his missionary motivations, ministry, and the historical significance of his martyrdom. Over the course of Korea’s turbulent modern history, Thomas has been portrayed and utilized in different ways depending on the political contexts of the United States, Japan, China, and North Korea. As a result, the identity of Thomas as a martyr, which was originally recognized by the early Korean church, has been distorted, exaggerated, or diluted. The most significant factor negatively influencing the evaluation of Thomas is his association with the General Sherman. Therefore, this study clarifies the facts by examining the issues related to Thomas and the General Sherman incident. The evaluation of Thomas is carried out by comprehensively considering not only the 17 days of the General Sherman incident, but also his entire life and the international political context of the time. Ultimately, this research aims to correct previous assessments and misconceptions about Thomas through a reinterpretation of historical sources, and to objectively present the missiological and historical significance of his martyrdom in the history of Korean Christianity.
