Abstract

This paper, based on US forecasting model of Presidential elections, examines the relationship between presidential performance and election outcomes after the democratization of Korea, and makes a forecast for coming Korean Presidential election. It has been found that the job approval rates of former Presidents have an impact on electoral outcomes, and the impact has been increased as we moves to recent election. The approval rates just before presidential election are especially powerful to the following electoral consequence. Unlike approval rates, economic performance of preceding Presidents are not so related to election outcome. Considering the patterns, it can be said that current situation, characterized as decreasing approval rate of President Lee Myungbak and pessimistic expectation of economy, is not so beneficial to the candidate of incumbent party. South Korea, now equipped with institutional democracy and experience of political power transition through it, would be a good case to devise electoral forecasting model sooner or later. In this aspect, this paper can be evaluated as a meaningful attempt to forecast election outcome with empirical data, not just speculation.
