Abstract
The meaning of family in any society may be important, but in a society belonging to an Asian country, the relationship of family exists with special expectations and meanings. Even if the tradition of Confucian familism that has been exerted in East Asia is not necessarily stated, family was a major factor in determining the quality of life and happiness in a developmental society. It has been the only social mechanism that protects individuals without any other safety net, and a strong framework for transmitting values and codes of conduct to such individuals. However, after the Asian economic crisis in 1997, the family went through rapid social changes and experienced socio-cultural upheaval affecting the dominant values and behavior. The domino economic collapse of the foreign exchange crisis during this period had a common impact on Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and Korea, the countries which were called Asia’s ‘Four Dragons’, and thereby films from these countries have represented the social phenomenon in their own way within the genre of family dramas. This study aims to explore the relationship between the characteristic aspects of society created by the experience of the 1997 Asian economic crisis and the way families are represented, in order to characterize the representational strategy of post-family films after that period. To this end, I would like to examine how the films as a mirror of social reality project the Asian economic crisis and the family dysfunction on screen, focusing on Ilo Ilo (Anthony Chen, 2013) and A Simple Life (Ann Hui, 2011). If the ‘disappearing’ father functions as a realistic metaphor for massive redundancies for the male heads of families that happened during the 1997 crisis, ‘tiger mom’ and the ‘weak’ sons can be read as signs of social crisis and anxiety spreading into family relationships. Ultimately, in this drama of family dissolution, the embodiment of the character of maid/cook/nanny or surrogate mother reveals the era of family crisis, pointing to how the concepts of family and their ethics need to be reorganized.
