Abstract
This study explores the portrayal of family romance in East Asian family films, focusing on how these films often address not the child's family romance but the father’s patriarchal family romance. The central question examines how these films articulate paternal aspirations and parenting ideals within the framework of family romance. Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Like Father, Like Son(2013) and Chung Mong-Hong’s A Sun(2019) serve as key examples for analysis. Both films depict fathers projecting their expectations and frustrations onto their sons, offering distinct portrayals of paternal family romance. The study begins by engaging with theoretical frameworks surrounding the concept of family romance. It then delves into the articulation of paternal family romance in these narratives, emphasizing the ways paternal desires and parenting ideals reflect culturally specific concerns, particularly those rooted in East Asian characteristics and problematics. Ultimately, this study situates the depiction of family romance in East Asian family dramas within broader generational landscapes, underscoring the intersection of neoliberal subjects’ anxieties, Confucian familism, and East Asian affective experiences.
