Abstract
Ch’oe In-gyu’s films Tuition, Homeless Angels, and Love and Vow revolve around the development of child protagonists who must come to terms with the given world order. Under the colonial system of representation, their growing-up requires the acknowledgment of their process of internalizing the colonial identity as ‘little citizens,’ which in late-colonial Korean films are presented as gendered subjects. In their prioritization of the transition of boys into full-grown soldiers in children’s growing-up, colonial Korean films write off the stories of girls. This essay traces the process of gendering the representation of children in late-colonial Korean cinema by discussing two films, Love and Vow and Tuition. In the analysis of Love and Vow, I particularly focus on the protagonist boy’s writing as a process of organizing his own future. The latter half of this essay discusses the structural absence and exclusion of girls’ stories, with a particular emphasis on Chŏnghŭi, a marginal girl character in Tuition. My analysis sheds light on how her ambition is dismissed in the film’s narrative and visual system, laying a further critique on the representation of children as “little citizens” as a gendered process.
