Abstract

The objective of this study is to reconsider the significance of linear perspective, which has been the subject of film studies and visual media studies and then establish a new status that the representation system occupies in the relationship between film and reality. In today's major film theory, the audience is given a more physical and sensuous position. Different from the theorist in the period of Political Modernism, who wished to correct passive subjects to criticize ideologies or spectacles, present-day film theorists claim that the audience of movies is originally an embodied subject who can deduce an active reality from a sensory experience. The audience does not occupy an abstract position, but is a being with a body. However, the flow of emphasizing the experience of sense or presentability in order to oppose abstraction is close to the dominant ideology of capitalism today, Of course, that doesn't mean we can go back to the criticism of past subjectivity. This study looks back on the limitations of established subjectivity that the film theory has devoted itself to overcome this deadlock and then looks forth that the problem of reproduction is not actually a problem related to the subject's perception, but a problem of objective reality. And in order to examine the problem more closely, this study reinterprets the incomplete representation of linear perspective as a limitation of reality itself. In addition, by referring to the discussion of Andre Bazin and Sergei Eisenstein, who thought of subjectivity as a matter of objectivity in film theory, this study argues that the very limitations of the representation itself are already imprinted at the center of the reproduced reality.
