Abstract
The Jeju April 3 incident, the genocide of state power, caused the largest casualties in modern history except for the Korean War, but the need for research is raised in that there are relatively few accumulated research results. Based on Judith Butler's discussion in this paper, the results of examining ‘representation of the state violence in the documentary films’ focusing on Jeju Prayer, and Soup and Ideology are as follows. Jeju Prayer shows the tragic space of genocide and the past/present contrast, by representing the unjust death of the armed family, the spread of revenge due to genocide, and the absence of mourning due to the suppression of public power, through cross-ed editing of segmented videos, the desire of reverse screens, and the mourning through the gaze of the deceased. Soup and Ideology expresses the trauma of genocide and the approaching camera by representing being without boundaries, the absence of mourning due to fear of death, and the brutality of state violence through short size change, past/present contrast, and the contrast of contrast of light/shade in the animation. The significance of studying ‘representation of the state violence in the documentary films’ is as follows. First of all, based on Judith Butler's discussion, this paper considered the aggression of state violence, the hierarchy of sadness, and the differentiated distribution of mourning possibilities in Jeju Prayer, and Soup and Ideology. Next, Jeju Prayer, which depicts the metaphor of things and unique formal techniques, and Soup and Ideology, which depicts the history of private memory and the power of true cameras, show the dailyity, politics, sacrifice, and existence of state violence. Finally, the two films express the tragedy of genocide, historical trauma, and memory struggle through the metaphor of scenery and things, the polar contrast, and inconsistency of the screen.
